Description:

The old Sulphur City Fire Station is a single-story, rectangular (51′ x 26′) structure constructed of poured concrete materials. The roof, also of concrete, is flat with parapets. There are two garage doors, and singly placed windows have metal encased panes. A frieze on the front, “squareness” of the building, and horizontal and vertical lines give the building a hint of art deco style. Unfortunately cinder block additions to two sides of the building have impaired its architectural integrity
Type, style, and construction materials make this structure notable. WPA fire stations are most unusual; the art deco allusion unique; and the poured concrete walls are distinctive. The building also aided destitute workers by giving them an important job opportunity.
