Notes
According to Sparks, 1902-2004 Book by the Historic Society there were three structures built by the WPA in the Sparks vicinity, Concord District #84, Fairview (Earlabaugh) School District #85, and Union School District #83. Descriptions of these schools can be found on page 31.
“Concord School District No. 84
Concord School District was located in the northwest quarter of section 30-13-5E, in North Seminole Township. The land was deeded to the district by Mrs. Mary Bierman. ….During the Depression years, the Works Progress Administration built a rock school building. School was held in this building for several years and when the school was closed, about the year o1950, the building was used for a meeting place for Concord-Deer Creek Extension Homemakers Club as well as community activities. This school district was annexed to Payson School District. The property was later sold and the building was made into a private residence.
Fairview (Earlabaugh) School District #85
The first school was a one-room frame building, but around 1936 or 1937 it was torn down and replaced by the WPA with a new native stone building. Most of the school buildings that were built by the WPA were one or two-room rectangular buildings with a rounded arched doorway. The one-room schools had a doorway at one corner, and the two-room schools had two doors at the center. This school was a one-room rectangular rock building with a rounded arched doorway on the southwest corner with large windows along the west side. The school was located three miles east and three miles south of Sparks on the southeast corner and faced west. Some of the teachers were Neoma Bateson, Mr. Baugh, Arvila Manning, and Helen Helman. When the school was established was not found, but the school closed June 11, 1947. It was annexed into Sparks and Prague schools, The building is now boarded up and abandoned. Submitted by Cletus Pritchett.
Union School District #83
There apparently were several Union Schools in Lincoln County. This one was located one and one-half miles east of Highway 18 and a half mile south of Highway 18B. The Union School, established in 1908, was a white wooden frame building. It was replaced in 1939 by the WPA (Works Progress Administration). The Federal Government appropriated $5,465 for the new school building. The new building was constructed of native stone. The school was a large, almost square, one-story building with two rooms and two chimneys. It had a large rounded doorway for the main entrance. The school remained in use until 1948 when it was annexed into the Sparks and Meeker districts. The building has since been enlarged and is a private residence. Submitted by Cletus Pritchett.”
